Microstructure Characterization of Nickel Matrix Composite Reinforced with Tungsten Carbide Particles and Produced by Laser Cladding

Detailed experimental characterization of a laser‐clad metal matrix composite (MMC) consisting hard tungsten carbide particles embedded in comparatively soft nickel‐based is provided. Special focus the investigations placed on relationship between microstructure as‐deposited reinforcing and their hardness. Therefore, thermally induced dissolution carbides caused by laser deposition (LMD) processing studied. The as‐received powder blend mainly consists fused spherical ditungsten (W 2 C, W C 1− x ) monotungsten (WC, WC ). Dissolution large at matrix/particle interfaces fragmentation or even complete small due to high process temperature LMD observed. Primary C/W phases are partially dissoluted, layers secondary WC/Ni y formed interfaces. As these surface less than particles, local hardness gradually decreases from inner region across layer toward matrix, which supposed improve bonding inside matrix. depends grain size crystal structure carbides. Even when structures identical, fine grains have considerably higher coarse grains.
